Conference Description

This roundtable focused on the political-military aspects of US-China relations. Substantive discussion followed up on brief presentations by selected roundtable participants. The topics presented and discussed in the roundtable sessions included:
  • China's domestic political situation.
  • China and East Asian regional security.
  • China and proliferation concerns.
  • China, nuclear weapons, and strategic stability.
The discussions aimed to broaden consensus understanding of principal American concerns in each topic area and the problems and opportunities they pose to US interests. Based on the discussions, roundtable participants put forward policy recommendations that can be fruitfully considered by the administration and congressional leadership as they take office in early 2001.
